The brand new didactic facilities of the Department of Interpreting and Translation (DIT.Lab) were officially opened on Wednesday 11 November 2015. Our distinguished ribbon cutters were the University of Bologna new rector (Francesco Ubertini), the mayor of Forlì (Davide Drei), the Presidents of the local Chamber of Commerce (Alberto Zambianchi), and of the Fondazione Cassa dei Risparmi di Forlì (Roberto Pinza), and the Director of our Department, Rafel Lozano Miralles.
Following the official ceremony, Silvia Bernardini gave a brief presentation, in the form of an actual seminar, on the potential of corpora for research and learning. The rector and the other guests tried their hand at corpus work, relying on the purposely built “Rector’s corpora”. Activities included:
– identifying keywords in the electoral campaign;
– studying terminology and phraseology in the International Journal of Solids and Structures;
– pinpointing typical features of international English used by researchers from the Department of Engineering of the University of Bologna.
If you would like to know more and/or try out the activities for yourself, here is the presentation: Learning form texts 2.0 — Language and technology for translation (and more).
